Le nostre reti sono chiamate mist-nets perchè sono leggere e delicate, di modo da confondersi con il panorama, quasi fossero una nebbiolina (dall'inglese 'mist' = foschia e 'net' = rete). Sono state concepite per la cattura di passeriformi, quindi di uccelli di taglia ridotta. Ciò nonostante, capita saltuariamente di prendere anche animali di altro ordine.
Our mist-nets are so called because they are so that delicate and thin that they can get blurred and be hardly seen when looking at the landscape, more or less like they are a sort of a haze. Such type of nets have been conceived for the trapping of passerines, so not so big birds. However, it happens sometimes that we catch birds of different order than Passeriformes.
Nel pomeriggio di mercoledì 17 aprile, un gheppio (Falco tinnunculus) è stato preso dalle nostre reti. E' uno dei rapaci più piccoli nel nostro paese, quindi le nostre reti sono ancora abbatsanza robuste e ampie per catturarne qualche esemplare.
È il falco più diffuso in Europa, Asia e vaste regioni africane. In Italia può essere nidificante stazionario, migratore e svernante, ed è distribuito su tutto il territorio, con maggior diffusione nelle regioni centro-meridionali e insulari. L'habitat prediletto è costituito da bassa vegetazione, che permette la caccia di piccoli roditori, insetti, lucertole, piccoli serpenti e uccelli, quali storni, passeri e allodole.
In the afternoon of Wednesday the 17th of April, a kestrel (Falco tinnunculus) has been caught in our nets. Being one of the samllest hawks in Italy, our nets are still robust and broad enough to allow us to catch such animals. It is the most widespread falcon in Europe, Asia and some regions of Africa. In Italy the kestrel can be present in permanent populations, but it can be also a wintering or a migratory bird. It is spread over the whole territory but mainly concentrated in the central and southern regions and the islands. Its preferred habitat includes low vegetation areas, where it can hunt small rodents, insects, lizards, small snakes and birds, such as starlings, sparrows and skylarks.
