A variable week in Ponza

The week at the Ponza ringing station was marked by unstable weather conditions, which affected both migratory activity and fieldwork. After a sunny start with moderate numbers (around 50 individuals per day), mainly robins (Erithacus rubecula) and chiffchaffs (Phylloscopus collybita), the weather worsened with rain and strong winds, repeatedly forcing a reduction in sampling effort.

Despite this, ringing activities continued consistently, with modest but regular catches. The week also marked the arrival of several migratory species and the first individuals of the season, including Bonelli’s warbler (Phylloscopus bonelli), greenfinch (Chloris chloris), crag martin (Ptyonoprogne rupestris) and bluethroat (Luscinia svecica). Particularly noteworthy was the recapture of a robin ringed in Malta.

Among the most relevant observations was the arrival of the first subalpine warblers, mainly of the eastern form (Curruca cantillans), with the first adult males recorded. Some individuals showed intermediate features, suggesting possible hybridisation. Also worth noting were hoopoe (Upupa epops) and the first scops owl (Otus scops) of the season.

Overall, this was a transitional week: adverse weather temporarily slowed migration, but early signs of an increase are already evident.

Stay tuned!
