In the core of migration

Over the last ten days, spring migration on the island of Ponza has fully entered its peak phase, showing an intense yet variable pattern, closely linked to weather conditions.

After an apparently quiet start, with slow mornings and few captures, migratory activity often surged in the afternoon, with large arrivals - especially of swallows - and a steady increase in the total number of birds. During this phase, several important seasonal firsts were recorded, including cuckoo and icterine warbler, marking the arrival of long-distance migrants.

The following days, characterised by stable weather and warm temperatures, alternated between quieter periods and moderate activity, allowing for brief moments of rest. Nevertheless, noteworthy observations were made, including the first turtle doves and ring ouzels of the season, as well as a particularly interesting event with multiple scops owls captured in a single net round.

A short spell of unstable weather temporarily interrupted operations, but did not prevent very productive days, with hundreds of individuals ringed and intense migration concentrated in the middle of the day. During this period, wood warbler and whitethroat dominated the catches, alongside new seasonal arrivals of particular interest such as semi-collared flycatcher and a yellow wagtail of the thunbergi subspecies, typical of northern regions.

With the return of stable conditions, migration became more regular, with consistent daily numbers and a continuous flow of birds. The most abundant species remained wood warbler and whinchat, while new species continued to be added to the seasonal list, including swift and quail, alongside remarkable records such as rock thrush.

In the most recent days, continued good weather has led to a further intensification of migration, with very high numbers and particularly demanding fieldwork. Over 1,300 individuals were ringed in just two days, with a clear dominance of wood warbler and whitethroat.

Overall, this period represents one of the most active phases of the migration season on Ponza, where favourable weather conditions and mass arrivals combine to create a dynamic and exceptionally rich ornithological scenario.
