L'ultimo giorno del mese, la merla, pensando di aver ingannato il cattivo gennaio, uscì dal nascondiglio e si mise a cantare per sbeffeggiarlo. Gennaio se ne risentì, prese in prestito tre giorni a febbraio e scatenò il maltempo e il gelo. La merla si rifugiò e vi rimase per tre giorni. Una volta certa di essersela cavata, uscì dal camino, ma il suo bel piumaggio si era ingrigito a causa della fuliggine del camino. Ecco spiegati il perchè della durata più breve del mese di febbraio e la colorazione della livrea della merla, più grigiastra rispetto al maschio, dal quale si distingue anche per il becco non arancio sgargiante.
Sempre secondo la leggenda, se i giorni della merla sono freddi, la primavera sarà bella; se sono caldi, la primavera arriverà in ritardo.
Secondo studi fatti, non vi è una vera corrispondenza fra le date dei giorni della merla e le ondate di gelo, ma male non fa sperare in una bella primavera dopo un lungo e freddo inverno.
