All'avvicinarsi della luna piena di marzo, alla stazione di Ponza è giusto aspettarsi le cosiddette pettirossate, ovvero le serate in cui si catturano quasi esclusivamente un gran numero di pettirossi (Erithacus rubecula). Le condizioni di luce notturna, infatti, permettono gli spostamenti di questa specie anche subito dopo il crepuscolo.
Ieri sera, dopo l'ultimo giro alle reti abbiamo inanellato 320 pettirossi, per un totale di 800 catture in tutta sabato. Oggi la giornata è iniziata con un ritmo incalzante e ci attendiamo un'altra serata 'impegnata', visto che è il giorno esatto del plenilunio e si prevede bel tempo.
As the March full moon approaches, at the Ponza station we get ready for the so-called 'petirossata', litterally 'robins wave', which consists in the capture of a massive number of robins (Erithacus rubecula) during the evening hours. The moonlight conditions, in fact, allow the movements of this species even after twilight.
Last night, after the last net round of the day we ringed 320 robins, for a total of 800 catches throughout Saturday. Today the day started with a fast pace too and we expect another 'busy' evening, as it is the exact day of the full moon and good weather is expected.
Ma i pettirossi non sono l'unica specie abbondante di questo periodo, infatti venerdì abbiamo iniziato la giornata con un numero notevole di storni (Sturnus vulgaris) e a metà mattinata avevamo già raggiunto le 100 catture (con tanti luì piccoli - Phylloscopus collybita - e codirossi spazzacamini - Phoenicurus ochruros).
Questo fine settimana abbiamo aggiunto nuove specie alla nostra lista del 2021, fra cui: assiolo (Otus scops), gheppio (Falco tinnunculus), tordela (Turdus viscivorus), e usignolo (Luscinia megarhynchos).
But robins are not the only abundant species of this period, in fact on Friday we started the day with a considerable number of starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) and by mid-morning we had already reached 100 catches (with many chiffchaffs - Phylloscopus collybita - and black redstart - Phoenicurus ochruros).
These last day of the week, we added new species to our 2021 list, including scops owl (Otus scops), kestrel (Falco tinnunculus), tordela (Turdus viscivorus), and nightingale (Luscinia megarhynchos).
Infine, alle nostre reti oggi è giunto anche un luì piccolo già inanellato nella lontana Norvegia!
Finally, today, at our nets we found even a chiffchaff already ringed in the faraway Norway!
