La stazione di Ponza è chiusa dal 28 maggio e ora possiamo guardare indietro e riassumere che gloriosa stagione di inanellamento abbiamo appena trascorso!
Molto probabilmente Ponza 2020 sarà ricordata come la stagione della pandemia di COVID19, ma noi vorremo ricorderdarla anche come la stagione dei record di inanellamento!
La prima parte del nostro periodo di inenallemento è passata abbastanza calma per quanto riguarda il numero di uccelli nelle reti e, fortunatamente, siamo stati risparmiati dalle solite "pettirossate", che normalmente colpiscono la nostra stazione durante la luna piena di marzo. Nonostante tale quiete, alcune delle specie tipiche di marzo hanno stabilito nuovi record, come ad esempio il numero più alto di pispole, assioli, fanelli e frosoni mai catturati.
Un numero elevato di forsoni non fa mai bene alle dita della mano, ma i loro becchi sono comunque incredibilmente belli!
Ponza station closed on the 28th of May, and now, we can look back and summarise what a glorious ringing season we just experienced!
Most probably Ponza 2020 will be remembered as the season of the COVID19 pandemic but we will also remember it as the season of the records, indeed!
The first part of our ringing period was quite calm in terms of number of birds in the nets, and, fortunately, we have been spared from the usual ‘robins waves’ that normally hit our station during the full moon of March. However, already some of the typical March species set new records, as for example the highest number of meadow pipit, scops owl, linnet and hawfinch ever caught.
A high number of hawfiches is never good for your fingers, but how tremendously beautiful their bills look!
La quiete di marzo ci ha aiutato a prepararci per un epico aprile, che ci ha fatto raggiungere il numero più grande di catture in un mese, oltre 12000!
L'upupa ha stabilito il nuovo record con 65 catture in totale, mentre nel frattempo i codirossi e le sterpazzoline hanno letteralmente raddoppiato il record precedente invadendo l'isola come mai visto prima e sono stati costantemente presenti nelle nostre reti per circa due mesi, fino alla fine della stagione.
Anche maggio non ci ha lasciati senza numeri eccezionali: abbiamo avuto una grande abbondanza di averla piccola e molte averla capirossa, 62 (!).
La stagione record ci ha anche permesso di incontrare 6 nuove specie: migliarino di palude, tordo sassello, cannaiola verdognola e due vere e proprie rarità: il falco della regina e lo spioncello marino.
The quiet of March helped us getting prepared for an epic April, which led us the largest number ever caught in a month, over 12000!
Hoopoe set the new record ever since with 65 individuals caught in total, meanwhile redstarts and subalpine warbler literally doubled the previous record invading the island as never seen before and they have been constantly present in our nets for about two months, until the end of the season.
May did not come without outstanding numbers too: we had a great abundance of red-backed shrike and a lot of woodchat shrikes, 62(!).
The record season also allowed us to meet 6 new species: common reed bunting, redwing, marsh warbler, and - two rare ones - Eleonora's falcon and rock pipit.
L'intera stagione è stata incredibile in quanto rappresenta il secondo miglior anno in termini di numero totale di catture con 20500 uccelli inanellati.
Tuttavia la stagione 2020 è stata una stagione da record non solo per i numeri di uccelli: abbiamo infatti raggiunto il maggior numero di giorni attivi in una stagione - 82, il minor iù numero di giorni con reti chiuse durante la stagione (solo 1!), e, in fine, l'inizio più anticipato (5 marzo) e la fine più avanzata nella stagione (28 maggio).
The whole season was incredible as it brough us to the second-best year in terms of total number of captures with 20500 ringed birds.
However, the 2020 season was a record season not only for numbers related to birds: we scored the highest number of active days in a season - 82, the less number of days with closed nets during the season, (only 1!), and, in the end, the earliest start (5th of March) and the latest end (28th of May).
Sarebbe stato fantastico condividere tutto questo con tutti voi, ma siamo fiduciosi che vivremo di nuovo insieme questa avventura a Ponza nel 2021!
