Dal 17 al 20 febbraio 2017 birdwatchers da tutto il mondo prenderanno parte all'evento 'Great Backyard Bird Count'.
Il nome dell'evento si riferisce la fatto che i partecipanti (su base volontaria) sono invitati a conteggiare gli uccelli nel loro 'cortile', ovvero nei dintorni di dove si trovano.
Il primo Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) si è tenuto nel 1998. L'entusiasmo è dilagato negli anni e il numero di partecipanti è aumentato così tanto da renderlo un evento mondiale al giorno d'oggi. Perciò, il 20° GBBC annuale si terrà dal 17 al 20 febbraio 2017 a partire da giardini privati, parchi, centri naturalistici, sentieri d'escursionismo, cortili di scuole, balconi e panchine - ovvero ovunque tu possa osservare degli uccelli.
I birdwatchers che partecipano dovranno contare gli uccelli che vedono durante un intervallo di tempo di 15 minuti almeno, durante uno o più giorni indicati, per poi immettere i dati così raccolti nell'apposita sezione del sito birdcount.org. L'insieme dei dati contribuirà a dare un'idea della distribuzione degli uccelli e aiutare così gli scienziati ad apprezzare gli eventuali cambiamenti avvennuti durante gli ultimi 20'anni.
Il primo GBBC fu un esperimento, ma ora è un ottimo modo per coinvolgere le persone nelle attività scientifiche (citizen science) ... nessun altro programma permette ai volontari di aiutare a scattare un'istantanea della situazione attuale dell'avifauna per aiutare noi scienziti a comprendere l'impatto del cambiamento climatico sull'avifauna!

The first Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) was held in 1998. But the enthusiasm of its growing number of participants for this now-global event has never wavered. The 20th annual GBBC is taking place February 17-20 in backyards, parks, nature centres, on hiking trails, school grounds, balconies, and beaches - anywhere you find birds.
Birdwatchers count the birds they see for at least 15 minutes on one or more days of the count, then enter their checklists at birdcount.org. All the data contribute to a snapshot of bird distribution and help scientists see changes over the past 20 years.
The very first GBBC was an experiment, but now it is a great way to introduce people to participation in citizen science...no other programme allows volunteers to take an instantaneous snapshot of global bird populations that can contribute to our understanding of how a changing climate is affecting birds!
