La stagione è iniziata più o meno come sempre....siamo arrivati sull'isola alla fine di febbraio per preparare tutto e essere operativi a partire dal 5 marzo. Eravamo a conoscenza che la situazione in Italia e nel resto d'Europa stava facendosi preoccupante a causa della diffusione del COVID-19. Tuttavia, abbiamo cercato di agire secondo quanto pianificato per il più a lungo possibile. Abbiamo accolto il primo gruppo di volontari e siamo riusciti a inanellare normalmente per la prima settimana. Quando è stato stabilito il regime di isolamento in tutto il paese abbiamo salutato i nostri volontari, affinchè potessero tornare dalle loro famiglie. Dopodiché non abbiamo più potuto accettare alcun volontario e ci siamo dovuti basare sulle nostre stesse uniche forze. In poche parole, il progetto è divenuto un affare di famiglia!
Ciò ha richiesto un'organizzazione totalmente diversa dal solito, ma abbiamo imparato a gestire un grande progetto come questo anche con poche persone. Anche se ci si è presentata davanti a noi un'impresa davvero impegnativa ed estenuante, siamo comunque riusciti a completare la stagione. Il tempo è stato abbastanza clemente quest'anno e gli uccelli sono arrivati numerosi ma diluiti durante il periodo, il che ci ha permesso di tenere le reti aperte tutti i giorni tranne 3 volte, in cui la quantità di uccelli migratori che entravano nelle reti ci obbligava a chiudere prima del normale.
Motivazione, esperienza, autocontrollo, forza di volontà e passione sono state le cose che ci hanno permesso di proseguire fino alla fine. Abbiamo ricevuto molto supporto morale dagli amici a distanza, che è stato sicuramente un elemento importante per il successo di quest'anno. Inoltre, abbiamo avuto la fortuna di trascorrere la nostra qurantena su un'isola meravigliosa e di mantenerci costantemente attivi.
Ci sarebbe piaciuto essere in grado di tenervi aggiornato, ma abbiamo preferito in un tempo così difficile e senza precedenti dare priorità ad altre notizie e quindi abbiamo deciso di sospendere il nostro blog quotidiano per l'intera durata del progetto.
Come sempre Ponza ci ha offerto momenti ed esperienze indimenticabili. Ogni anno è un'avventura e il 2020 lo è stato anche di più. Siamo lieti e orgogliosi di potervi raccontare la storia di una stagione di successo anche quest'anno, nonostante le sfide che abbiamo dovuto affrontare, ma speriamo davvero di condividere di nuovo la prossima stagione con voi.
Anche se siamo riusciti a gestire il progetto come previsto, è stato davvero difficile senza i nostri volontari, i membri del team CISCA, i ricercatori e gli amici e quindi non vediamo davvero l'ora di lavorare di nuovo con tutti voi nel 2021!
The year started pretty much as the past years…we arrived at the end of February to set up the station and be ready to rock and roll on the 5th of March. We knew that the situation in Italy, as in some other parts of Europe, was getting worrisome because of the spreading of the COVID-19. However, we tried to stick to our business as usual as long as possible. We welcomed the first group of volunteers and we ran the ringing activity as always for the first couple of weeks. When lockdown was established all over the country and we had to let our volunteers reach their homes, we could not accept any other help and we had to base on our own strengths. In other words, the project became unfortunately a family business!
This implied a totally different organisation than usual, but we learnt how to run a big project like this even with few people. Even if challenging, exhausting and very demanding, we managed to complete the season anyway. The weather has been quite merciful this year and birds came numerous but diluted during the period, which allowed us to keep the nets opened every day except for 3 times when the amount of migratory birds entering the nets obliged us to close earlier than normal.
Motivation, experience, self-control, willpower, and passion were the things that let us carry on until the end. We received a lot of moral support from friends online, which has been for sure an important element for this year success. Moreover, we have been lucky enough to spend our lockdown in such a marvelous island and keeping ourselves continually active.
We would have loved to be able to keep you updated, but we preferred in such difficult and unprecedented time to give priority to other news and therefore we decided to suspend our daily blog for the entire duration of the project.
As always Ponza offered us unforgettable moments and experiences. Every year it is an adventure and 2020 was even more. We are glad and proud we can tell you the story of a successful ringing season also this year, despite the challenges we had to face, but we really hope to share the next one with you again.
Even if we managed to run the project as planned, it was really hard without our volunteers, CISCA Team members, scientists and friends and therefore we really look forward to work with all of you again in 2021!
