Gli scorsi giorni sono arrivati i Gruccioni alle nostre reti. Bellissimi uccelli dalla livrea colorata e sgargiante: rossiccio, giallo,turchese, azzurro, verde, blu e nero, con un occhio rosso intenso.
Sono parenti del Martin pescatore e della Ghiandaia marina, appartenendo all'ordine dei Coraciformi.
During the past days the Bee-eaters came to our nets. They are beautiful birds with a colorful and gaudy: reddish, yellow, turquoise, light blue, green, blue and black, with a deep red eye.
They belong to the same order as the Kingfisher and the European Roller (Coraciiformes).
Svernano in Africa dove gli habitat prescelti devono presentare bacini di acqua dolce, meglio se vicino a foreste, savane, praterie e aree agricole. Per nidificare, questi insettivori hanno però bisogno di pareti verticali formate da terreno argilloso o sabbioso. Ogni primavera compiono un viaggio molto lungo per arrivare in Europa, volando anche per 15.000 km.
They overwinter in Africa where the suitable habitats are characterised by the presence of fresh water basins, mainly if close to forests, savannahs, praries or rural areas. To nest, these insectivores need vertical walls made of clay or sandy soils. Every spring they face a long journey to come to Europe, flying for 15.000 km even!
Sono animali gregari in tutte le occasioni della vita, infatti si riproducono in colonie e cacciano in gruppo. Anche la migrazione viene affrontata in gruppo ed è per questo che una volta inanellati è buona norma rilasciare questi uccelli tutti assieme, così che possano tornare a percorrere la strada assieme!
They are gregarious animals during all the stages of life. In fact, they breed in colonies and the hunt in groups. They also migrate in flocks and therefore it is a good practice to release the caught Bee-eaters all together at the same time, once ringed, so that they can cover the remaining distances all together!
Come molti sanno, il passaggio dei Gruccioni, spesso precede l'arrivo di piogge e maltempo. Infatti, sull'isola è tornato il maltempo e siamo stati costretti a chiudere le reti!
As a lot of you know, the passage of the Bee-eaters, often, precedes rains and bad weather. In fact, on the island bad weather is bakc and we closed the nets!
