Sull'isola di ponza, nell'ultima settimana, si sono susseguiti due fronti di maltempo intenso, con un vento così forte da non permetterci di aprire le reti. Il primo si è verificato fra il 28 e il 29 aprile. Ieri abbiamo chiuso le reti solo in mattinata a causa della pioggia. Anche oggi le reti sono chiuse: si pensi che le onde sono alte anche 3 metri e che i traghetti sono bloccati nei porti! Pare che il maltempo durerà altre 48 ore.
Questi cambiamenti metereologici hanno influito molto sul passaggio degli uccelli.
During the past week, two big bad weather fronts have passed over the island of Ponza, and the weather was so straong that we weren't able to open the nets. The firt front passed on the 28th-29th of April. Yesterday, we had to close the nets during the morning only, because of the rain. Today, again, the nets are closed. since the wind is so strong that the waves are 3 metres tall in the sea in front of us and the ferries are not allowed to leave the harbour! Apparently, such bad weatehr is going to last for 48 hours more.
Such wether changes affected the passage of birds in these days.
Nei giorni prima sel primo maggio, dopo il primo fronte di brutto tempo, i totali giornalieri non superavano i 150 uccelli inanellati. Dal primo maggio, chiusosi con circa 135 uccelli, i numeri hanno cominiciato a lievitare. Il 2 maggio abbiamo catturato circa 330 uccelli, il 3 maggio quasi 700. Ieri, come già detto, siamo rimasti chiusi per pioggia la mattina fino alle 13.00. Tuttavia, non appena riaperto, gli uccelli sono passati sfruttando la finestra di tempo favorevole alla migrazione. In sole sette ore di attività, abbiamo inanellato 800 uccelli, per cui, sebbene i numeri non raggiungano i record scorsi, si può cimunque parlare di 'botta'.
In the days before the 1st of May, after the first bad weather front, we did not catch more than 150 birds per day. After the 1st of May, which ended with abotu 135 birds, numbers have started to raise. The 2nd of May we ringed about 330 birds, while on the 3rd almost 700. As already said, yesterday, we had to close the nets in the morning until 13.00 h. However, once we opened, a lot of birds started passing, taking advantage of the narrow window of favourable wether for migrating. In only seven hours of activity, we ringed 800 birds, and therefore, even if the numbers do not reach those of the records, we can say we had a 'botta' day (= day with a exceptional number of birds ringed).
Le specie catturate sono varie ed interessanti, e fra queste vogliamo citare: il tanto atteso codirossone, il maestoso falco lodolaio, il delicato forapaglie e il sorprendente succiacapre!
The species we caught in these days are several and interesting, and among these we would like to mention: the awaited rock thrush, the glorious hobby, the delicate sedge warbler and the fascinating nightjar!
